Entrance with Plant Wall

The interior design studio, located on the 2nd floor of EML is home to the 1st and 2nd year I.D. students. Studio is where we have our classes, work on projects, and sometimes have guest speakers come and take to our class about different topics and products. Studio is meant to be a place that encourages learning and creativity, but it also needs to be a space where it is both relaxing and welcoming. When you first walk into studio you are greeted with a large plant wall with the words: NDSU Interior Design, the wall incorporates backlighting making it stand out. Making this the first thing one sees helps them to establish exactly where they are, this plant wall helps to bring the outdoors in. To incorporate more biophilia, planter boxes are placed right outside of the individual classrooms and within the individual classrooms there are plants hanging from the walls. The overall layout of studio is open, folding DIRTT walls are integrated in the space that way the space can be completely open when needed. The DIRTT wall that separates the two classrooms is mostly glass, the middle of the wall is a whiteboard to aid in collaboration and privacy. Since the upper and lower portion of the wall is glass, this allows both sides have access to the natural lighting. In the existing studio space only one side has access to natural light. The colors used in the space are navy blue, orange, red, and other shades of blue. To stimulate creativity, oranges and reds are used as accent colors throughout the space. Navy blue wallpaper is on the north walls in studio, adding a dramatic affect. A bright blue is used in the back room to help aid in destressing and relaxation, a couch and tv is included in this space allowing students to come, take a break or even a nap when needed. To make sure everyone has storage, each desk has its own box /file and in the back room everyone has a designated locker. Studio can get a little loud sometimes, placing acoustic baffles on the ceiling throughout studio will help control sound. In the individual classrooms and main area of studio there are colorful acoustical tiles in the shape of hexagons. These helps absorb sound but also adds a decorative element to the space, also helps add more color into the spaces.
