Graduation 5.JPG

Hello!

My name is Katie Hathaway, and I am originally from Minneapolis, MN. I am a recent graduate of the accredited Interior Design Program at North Dakota State University, where I also earned a minor in Business Administration. Initially, I applied to NDSU as an architecture major, but after conducting research and participating in informational interviews, I decided to switch to Interior Design. It turned out to be one of the best decisions I have ever made.

My Story

I’m from Champlin, MN, a suburb located 30 minutes north of Minneapolis. I come from a close-knit family of five, including an older brother and a black lab. I feel incredibly fortunate to have such a supportive family who has always been there for me—whether in my sports pursuits, deciding on a university, or exploring new interests. Some of my favorite hobbies include working out, cooking, traveling to new places, spending time on the water, and enjoying quality moments with family and friends.

From a young age, I was always asking my mom if I could redecorate my room. Whether it was rearranging the furniture, requesting new decor, or even convincing her to paint a design on my bedroom walls—something she kindly did twice—my passion for transforming spaces was evident. However, I never initially considered interior design as a career path. That changed when my parents remodeled our kitchen and living room. The transformation of those spaces amazed me, and seeing the process unfold in real time made me realize how much of an impact design could have on a space and the people who live in it. It was in that moment that I knew I wanted to pursue a career in interior design.

Although I’ve lived in Minnesota my entire life, my dream is to move to South Carolina and work with a residential design firm in Charleston. My mom is from the East Coast, and growing up, our family often traveled there. It was during these visits that I fell in love with the architecture—the beauty and distinct style stood out to me in ways that the designs of Minnesota and North Dakota don’t. My ultimate dream is to design waterfront homes, and while I would love to make that dream a reality in Charleston, I would also be thrilled to design waterfront properties here in Minnesota if I end up staying.
