Stepping Stones is a permanent living facility veterans in the Los Angeles area. Located near New Directions for Veterans and the VA. Stepping Stones was designed to create a community where veterans can come together and build camaraderie with one another. Support services such as, a community room and kitchen, gym, theatre room, and additional support areas are accessible 24/7 to the veterans. Accessibility was carefully thought out through the space, all of the support spaces along with community kitchen are all ADA accessible, easy circulation patterns for those in wheelchairs or other assistant devices can easily maneuver through the space.
The Barracks is the apartment side of Stepping Stone. There are 12 micro-apartments equipped with a kitchenette, bathroom, and a sleeping area. While small, the apartments are designed in a way that makes the space feel bigger than it is. Located within The Barracks there are two shared kitchens and two laundry rooms. Inclusive design was thought of during the design of the micro-apartments, making the space accessible to anyone who calls it “home”. The bathrooms are completely accessible with a roll-in shower and a walk-in tub, ADA compliant toilets and custom vanity. The kitchenette is also designed to be ADA accessible, the height of the countertops and accessible appliances such as microwave, sink, and dishwasher.
